Study Guide · Addiction & Recovery · Galatians 5:1
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." — Galatians 5:1
This 8-session study explores the nature of biblical freedom — not the absence of boundaries, but freedom from the patterns, strongholds, lies, and spiritual forces that keep us from walking in the Spirit. Designed for individuals and small groups.
Session 1 — What Is Freedom?
- 1
How do you currently define freedom? How does Galatians 5:1 reframe that definition?
- 2
What are you most in bondage to — sin patterns, anxious thoughts, past wounds, relational entanglement?
- 3
What would freedom actually look like in your life? Be specific.
1. How do you currently define freedom? How does Galatians 5:1 reframe that definition?
2. What are you most in bondage to — sin patterns, anxious thoughts, past wounds, relational entanglement?
3. What would freedom actually look like in your life? Be specific.
Session 2 — The Truth That Sets Free
1. Jesus says "the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). What truth do you most need right now?
2. What lies have you been living by — about God, about yourself, about the world?
3. Where did you first believe those lies? Have you ever challenged them with Scripture?
Session 3 — Identity and the Enemy
1. Read John 8:44. What strategies does the enemy use to keep people in bondage?
2. How have accusations, shame, and lies shaped your self-understanding?
3. What does it mean to "resist the devil" (James 4:7) practically?
Session 4 — Breaking Strongholds
1. A stronghold is a pattern of thinking or behaving that has become entrenched. What strongholds do you see in your life?
2. 2 Corinthians 10:4–5 describes the weapons that demolish strongholds. What are they?
3. What would it take to begin dismantling one specific stronghold this month?
Session 5 — Forgiveness and Release
1. Unforgiveness is one of the most common spiritual strongholds. Who do you need to forgive?
2. Forgiveness does not mean what they did was acceptable. What does it mean?
3. Is there self-forgiveness needed here — something you have not been able to release?
Session 6 — Walking in the Spirit
1. Read Galatians 5:16–25. What does it mean to "walk in the Spirit"?
2. Which fruit of the Spirit is most underdeveloped in your life right now?
3. What practices, habits, or disciplines cultivate life in the Spirit for you?
Session 7 — Community and Accountability
1. Freedom is rarely sustained in isolation. Who are the people walking with you toward freedom?
2. What would you need to bring out of the darkness and into the light with another trusted person?
3. What does healthy, safe accountability look like — and where can you find it?
Session 8 — Standing Firm
1. Paul says "stand firm" — freedom must be maintained. What are your greatest vulnerabilities to returning to bondage?
2. What is your plan for the next 90 days to sustain and grow in the freedom you've gained?
3. Write a statement of commitment — what you are choosing and what you are releasing.
