What Is Biblical Anxiety Counseling?
Biblical anxiety counseling at RHM goes beyond symptom management. We help you understand the heart-level beliefs, fears, and patterns that fuel anxiety — and we bring the truth of God's Word to bear on each of them.
We take anxiety seriously. It is not simply "weak faith" or a spiritual problem to be prayed away. For many people, anxiety has neurological, physiological, relational, and spiritual dimensions — and a competent counselor addresses all of them.
RHM offers individual counseling, group support (Facing Fear, Finding Faith), neurofeedback brain training, and pastoral care — all calibrated to your specific situation.
Types of Anxiety We Address
RHM serves individuals with a wide range of anxiety-related concerns. Each is met with compassion and biblical clarity.
Generalized Anxiety
Persistent, excessive worry about everyday concerns — work, health, relationships, the future. Biblical counseling helps address the heart beliefs driving these patterns.
Social Anxiety
Fear of judgment, humiliation, or rejection in social settings. Often rooted in identity struggles that Scripture speaks directly to.
Panic Disorder
Sudden, intense episodes of fear with physical symptoms — racing heart, shortness of breath, dread. RHM counselors walk with clients through these experiences pastorally.
Health Anxiety
Excessive fear of illness, disease, or physical symptoms. Often connected to fear of death — a place where the gospel has profound things to say.
Trauma-Related Anxiety
Anxiety rooted in past trauma, abuse, or distressing events. Addressed through trauma-sensitive biblical counseling and, when appropriate, Brainspotting.
Spiritual Anxiety
Fear about salvation, God's judgment, eternal destiny, or loss of faith. One of the most important areas where pastoral care makes the greatest difference.
Anxiety in Children & Teens
Young people are not immune to anxiety. RHM works with youth through age-appropriate, gospel-centered care in collaboration with parents.
Anxiety Related to Life Transitions
Major changes — job loss, divorce, illness, relocation, retirement — can trigger deep anxiety. Counseling provides stability and biblical grounding through transition.
How RHM Helps with Anxiety
Scripture-Based Reframing
We identify the lies, fears, and distorted beliefs beneath anxiety and replace them with God's truth — not through toxic positivity but through honest, prayerful engagement with the Word.
Lament & Honest Prayer
Many anxious people have never been given permission to bring their fears honestly to God. We teach the practice of lament — pouring out the heart before a God who is not surprised or disturbed by what He finds there.
Identifying Root Beliefs
Anxiety often grows from core beliefs about God's character, one's own worth, or the world's safety. Counseling helps uncover these roots and address them at the source.
Practical Habits & Spiritual Disciplines
Sabbath, prayer rhythms, gratitude practices, community engagement, Scripture meditation — we help clients build the habits that cultivate peace over time.
Group Support
Our 'Facing Fear, Finding Faith' Living Free group provides community with others walking a similar road — a powerful reminder that you are not alone.
Neurofeedback (When Appropriate)
For individuals whose anxiety has a strong neurological component, neurofeedback brain training can be a helpful tool alongside biblical counseling. We evaluate fit carefully.
Frequently Asked Questions About Anxiety Counseling
Is anxiety a sin?
Anxiety is not a sin — it is a human experience that God's Word speaks to with compassion, not condemnation. While worry can become sinful when it reflects a refusal to trust God, the experience of anxiety — including physical symptoms — is part of living in a broken world. Philippians 4:6-7 is not a rebuke; it is an invitation.
How is biblical anxiety counseling different from therapy?
Biblical counseling addresses anxiety through Scripture, prayer, and the work of the Holy Spirit alongside sound pastoral care. It examines the heart-level beliefs driving anxiety, not just the symptoms. It does not replace medication prescribed by a physician, and RHM counselors work collaboratively with medical providers when appropriate.
Do I need to be a Christian to receive counseling for anxiety?
No. RHM serves individuals of any background or belief. Our care is explicitly Christ-centered, but we welcome all who are willing to receive it. Many non-believers have found RHM's approach deeply helpful.
Does RHM offer telehealth anxiety counseling?
Yes. We offer telehealth video counseling through our HIPAA-compliant Doxy.me platform, making anxiety counseling accessible anywhere in Wisconsin.
Can anxiety counseling be combined with neurofeedback?
Yes. For some individuals, neurofeedback brain training is a helpful tool alongside biblical counseling — addressing the neurological patterns underlying anxiety while counseling addresses the spiritual and relational dimensions. Talk to our team to explore your options.
