Why Pastors Need Supervision and Soul Care

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. — Acts 20:28

Pastoral ministry is one of the most relationally and spiritually demanding vocations in the world. Pastors carry the weight of multiple people’s crises, griefs, and spiritual struggles — often while managing their own. Studies consistently show elevated rates of burnout, depression, marital difficulties, and moral failure among clergy. The church is losing pastors at an alarming rate — not primarily to theological defection but to exhaustion and isolation.

Acts 20:28 — Watch Over Yourselves First

Paul’s charge to the Ephesian elders is revealing: Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock. The reflexive care — watching over yourself — comes first. This is not self-indulgence. It is the recognition that a shepherd who is not cared for cannot care for the flock.

And yet pastoral culture often actively discourages self-care. Asking for help can feel like weakness. The unspoken expectation in many congregations is that the pastor is the strong one who doesn’t need what everyone else needs.

What Soul Care for Pastors Looks Like

Pastoral soul care involves:

  • Regular supervision: A structured relationship with a more experienced pastor or counselor who provides accountability, reflection, and wisdom
  • Peer community: A group of fellow pastors who can share honestly without fear of judgment
  • Personal counseling: Many pastors need to be on the receiving end of skilled, compassionate care
  • Spiritual direction: A relationship focused on deepening one’s own walk with God, separate from ministry responsibilities
  • Sabbath and margin: The rhythmic practice of rest and withdrawal that Jesus modeled consistently

The Church Cannot Afford to Lose Its Pastors

Every pastor who burns out leaves a congregation in turmoil, a family in pain, and a community without a shepherd. The investment in pastoral soul care is not merely about individual wellbeing. It is about the long-term health of the church.

Restoring Hope Ministries offers pastoral supervision and soul care specifically designed for ministry leaders who need a safe space to be honest, to be cared for, and to be equipped for the long road ahead.
