When Should a Pastor Refer Someone to Biblical Counseling?

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. — Proverbs 15:22

One of the most important skills a pastor can develop is knowing when to refer. This is not a sign of pastoral weakness — it is a sign of wisdom, humility, and genuine care for the person in front of you. Proverbs 15:22 is clear: Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Referral is not abdication. It is multiplication of care.

Signs That a Referral May Be Needed

There are certain situations that, regardless of a pastor’s gifts and training, are best handled by a trained counselor:

  • Suicidal ideation or self-harm: Any indication of suicidal thoughts should be taken seriously and addressed with professional support immediately.
  • Trauma: Complex trauma often requires specialized care that goes beyond pastoral support.
  • Addiction: Active substance use disorders often have physical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions requiring coordinated, specialized care.
  • Psychiatric presentations: Symptoms that may indicate bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or severe depression require clinical assessment.
  • Domestic violence: Situations involving abuse require safety planning and specialized training most pastors have not received.
  • Persistent lack of progress: If someone has been meeting with you for months with no movement, a fresh set of trained eyes may be what they need.

How to Make a Warm Referral

The manner in which a pastor refers matters enormously. A cold referral can feel like rejection. A warm referral communicates ongoing care: I care deeply about what you’re sharing, and I want to make sure you get the best possible support. Can we find someone together? Staying involved communicates that the referral is an addition to care, not a replacement for it.

Building Relationships Before the Crisis

The best referral relationships are built before they are needed. Restoring Hope Ministries exists to be that resource for pastors across the region. We are a trusted referral partner for churches who want their people to receive excellent care.

Care That Is Measured — Because People Are What Matter

Restoring Hope Ministries tracks the well-being of every participant in our clinical and faith-based services using empirically validated screeners, clinical interviews, behavioral analysis, and self-report — so we can honestly see whether the people we serve are getting better. This rigor reflects the training of our founder, Dr. Gross, whose clinical psychology education and practical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin prepared him for this type of organization and care.
