Watch this 3-minute overview to understand how neurofeedback works

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive brain training system that helps the brain practice healthier patterns of regulation. During a session, small sensors placed on the scalp measure the brain's electrical activity (EEG). That information is translated into real-time feedback—often through sounds or visuals—so the brain can observe its own activity and gradually learn to self-adjust.

Nothing is being sent into the brain. The sensors are read-only. Neurofeedback works by helping the brain recognize when it is moving toward more stable and efficient patterns, and over time, the brain tends to spend more time in those states.

Neurofeedback is designed to support improvements in areas such as ADHD, PTSD, and executive function issues. It is not a quick fix but rather a process that tends to work best when done consistently over time with individualized adjustments.

RHM Uses BrainPaint® System: At Restoring Hope Ministries, we use the BrainPaint® neurofeedback system—the #1 neurofeedback solution for addiction facilities and clinical settings. BrainPaint® provides automated, evidence-based protocols that have been scientifically validated and are the same protocols used in landmark UCLA studies.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Neurofeedback for PTSD

One of the most disturbing symptoms of PTSD is a very numb feeling of unreality. Most individuals who suffer with this symptom are convinced that they have forever lost their minds. They have no idea that this symptom is so common among those who suffer with PTSD. This issue of unreality is one of the first issues to resolve with neurotherapy.

Neurotherapy, specifically alpha-theta protocol, is a training process that has been scientifically-proven to improve all the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as issues that people develop as the result of dysfunctional family systems, grief or trauma.

Bill Scott & Alpha-Theta Neurofeedback

Bill Scott is considered a world-renowned expert on alpha-theta neurofeedback and developed a system that replicates the exact protocol used for PTSD proven in research.

What Happens During a Neurofeedback Session

A step-by-step walkthrough of what to expect when you come in for neurofeedback training.

1

Assessment & Protocol Selection

In your first neurofeedback session, your practitioner will ask you approximately 90 questions to understand your unique brainwave patterns and create an individualized protocol tailored specifically for you.

In subsequent sessions, you'll answer about 6 questions to fine-tune your protocols and track your progress toward your healing goals.

2

Placing the Sensors

Your provider will place small sensors on your ear and scalp. It doesn't hurt and nothing goes into your brain!

The sensors only pick up the electrical activity coming from your brainwaves—they're read-only and non-invasive. You may have 1-3 sensor placement changes throughout your session.

Sensor placement typically takes 25-30 minutes of feedback time to complete the full neurofeedback training.

3

Eyes Closed Feedback (If Applicable)

Depending on your personalized protocol, you may receive feedback with your eyes closed (auditory feedback only).

When the eyes are closed, alpha brainwaves rise naturally (since the brain is in a relaxed state), allowing you to enter deeper, more meditative states. Many people find alpha-theta neurofeedback very relaxing and restorative.

You'll hear audio feedback that responds in real-time to your brain's electrical activity, guiding your brain toward healthier patterns.

4

Eyes Open Feedback with BrainPaint® (If Applicable)

With eyes open neurofeedback training, you watch fractals morphing on the screen. You can also be mindful of the green and red graphs showing your real-time brainwave activity.

BrainPaint® will let you know when you are "in the zone" — the perfect state of relaxed attentiveness with your awareness in the present moment. We call this "What is."

Every 2 minutes, BrainPaint® gives you additional feedback to reinforce when your brain is in optimal states. The visual and auditory feedback work together to help your brain learn healthier patterns.

The Experience

Throughout your session, you're essentially teaching your brain to recognize when it's moving toward healthier, more regulated patterns. The feedback is immediate and continuous, allowing your brain to practice self-regulation in real-time.

Most people find neurofeedback sessions to be calming and often report feeling relaxed or refreshed afterward. Some fall asleep during sessions (especially with eyes-closed protocols), which is completely normal and beneficial—your brain is still learning even while resting.

How Neurofeedback Works: A Deeper Look

Understanding the neuroscience behind brain training and why it works for so many conditions.

Brain Dysregulation

Many psychological and neurological conditions stem from a brain that has learned unhelpful patterns of electrical activity. Whether from trauma, accident, or learned behavior, these patterns can keep us stuck in a state of hypervigilance, disconnection, or poor focus.

Think of it like a musician who has practiced the wrong technique for years—the "wrong song" has become automatic.

Real-Time Brain Feedback

During a neurofeedback session, sensors read your brain's electrical activity in real time. That information is immediately translated into feedback—sounds shifting, visuals responding, or game elements moving based on your brain's state.

This is like giving your brain a mirror. It can now "see" itself and recognize when it's moving toward healthier patterns.

Neuroplasticity at Work

With consistent feedback, the brain begins to naturally prefer the healthier state. Over time, through a process called neuroplasticity, the brain rewires itself—building new neural pathways and strengthening the patterns associated with regulation and well-being.

The brain, incredibly, wants to be healthy. We're just removing the barriers and showing it the way.

Lasting Change

Unlike medication, which addresses symptoms while you're taking it, neurofeedback teaches your brain a new skill. Once learned, that skill remains. The changes tend to be stable and lasting.

You're not managing a condition—you're training your brain to function better permanently.

A Non-Medication Pathway to Brain Health

Many people come to neurofeedback hoping to address their concerns without medication. Others are looking to reduce medication dependency. Both are valid paths, and neurofeedback can play a meaningful role.

Important: Neurofeedback & Medical Care

Neurofeedback is not a replacement for medical care, medication management, or crisis services. If you are currently taking psychiatric medication, please continue to work with your prescriber. Any decisions about medication should be made together with your doctor, not independently. Neurofeedback can complement medical care—many people benefit from both working together.

Medication Approach

Fast symptom relief: Often effective within days or weeks
Ongoing dependency: Symptoms often return if medication is stopped
Potential side effects: Weight gain, sexual dysfunction, emotional blunting, dependency
Cost: Varies; many covered by insurance

Neurofeedback Approach

Gradual lasting change: Results build over sessions and persist long-term
Skills-based learning: The brain learns a skill; doesn't require ongoing "medication"
No chemical side effects: Non-invasive, no drugs entering the body
Cost: $125/session; scholarships available for those in need

The Best Path Forward

For many people, the answer isn't "medication versus neurofeedback"—it's "medication and neurofeedback." Some people start with neurofeedback while considering medication. Others are already on medication and want to explore whether neurofeedback can help them eventually reduce it (under medical supervision). Still others use neurofeedback to address concerns they don't want medication for at all.

The key is working with professionals who respect your goals and collaborate across disciplines. Your doctor, your counselor, and your neurofeedback provider can all work together to support your whole-brain, whole-person healing.

How Neurofeedback Changed Lives

Real stories from real people who discovered neurofeedback when traditional approaches weren't enough.

PTSD & Addiction Recovery

James

James, a veteran, had been in and out of rehab for years. Talk therapy helped, but he still felt stuck—constantly on edge, unable to sleep, battling intrusive thoughts. After learning about alpha-theta neurofeedback, he committed to a series of sessions. Within weeks, he noticed something different: the constant 'white noise' in his head quieted. His sleep improved. His craving intensity dropped. For the first time in years, he felt like his brain was on his side, not against him.

Today: 18 months sober, engaged in his recovery community, and continues neurofeedback sessions quarterly for maintenance.

ADHD & Executive Dysfunction

Sarah

Sarah, a high-performing professional, had always known something was 'off'—difficulty focusing despite her intelligence, constant forgetfulness, emotional dysregulation that didn't match her drive. She was offered ADHD medication but hesitated, worried about side effects. She tried neurofeedback with Beta/SMR protocols targeting attention and executive function.

Today: After 16 sessions, her ability to focus improved dramatically. She didn't need medication. She's more present with her family and experiencing better work performance without the anxiety medication typically caused her.

Child Behavioral Dysregulation

The Rodriguez Family

Ten-year-old Marco had severe tantrums—anger outbursts that left his family exhausted and hurt. Traditional behavioral approaches helped a little, but something deeper seemed amiss. His right hemisphere appeared dysregulated. After 8 neurofeedback sessions targeting right-brain stability, something shifted.

Today: Marco's tantrums reduced by 80%. He developed insight into his emotions. His whole family felt relief. The transformation wasn't just behavioral—it was neurological.

Anxiety & Sleep Disorder

Dr. Michael

Michael, a physician, understood the neuroscience behind his generalized anxiety and chronic insomnia but struggled to find relief. He tried medication, cognitive therapy, meditation—all helped somewhat. When he learned that neurofeedback specifically addresses the brain patterns underlying both conditions, he decided to try it as an adjunctive approach.

Today: Within 10 sessions, his sleep quality improved significantly. His anxiety symptoms reduced. He attributes his recovery to the combination of therapy, some targeted medication reduction (under his doctor's guidance), and neurofeedback re-training his nervous system.

Understanding Addiction: The Reward Deficiency Syndrome

Think of addiction as an allergy—an abnormal reaction to a substance. Dr. Kenneth Blum identified the Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS), which is linked to a defect in the dopamine receptor gene (D2A1 allele).

People with this genetic defect lack sufficient dopamine receptors in their brains to produce normal feelings of well-being. Individuals with a family history of alcoholism or polysubstance abuse may be born with this syndrome.

After an addict's first experience with alcohol or drugs, they immediately feel better than ever before. This feeling of wholeness significantly trumps all previous accomplishments and success. People with this gene tend to be more severely affected by polysubstance abuse, begin using at an earlier age, and have more severe episodes of intoxication.

Genetics vs. Epigenetics

Everyone inherits their genome, but they can potentially alter their epigenome. Understanding addiction as it relates to epigenetics brings both responsibility and hope.

Research with identical twins shows that as twins age, epigenetic differences accumulate—especially when their lifestyles differ. Chemical tags that control our genes change depending on what we eat, smoke, drink, and the company we keep.

This is one of the key differences between epigenetics and genetics: We are not victims of our genetics. 12-step and faith-based programs can correct the abnormality of RDS, but only a tiny percentage of addicts will overcome the tremendous resistance to that work without neurofeedback.

The Hijacked Brain: Why Addicts Resist Treatment

There's a growing trend that addiction is all about cravings, and if you reduce cravings, the addiction will be cured. This is a misnomer.

The reason an addict is addicted to chemicals and seemingly can't live without them is that they usually felt bad prior to having substances in their body. They have never felt as good as the average, non-addicted person.

Because of Reward Deficiency Syndrome, their mind develops an operating system that is more self-centered than the average person—they simply can't experience satisfaction, appreciation, and gratitude naturally. Mood-altering substances temporarily and artificially correct this abnormality.

The Survival Response

Intervention always triggers an intense fight-or-flight response. Since an addict views substances with the same importance as air, water, and food, effective treatment evokes an intense survival reaction.

For all the rapid progress man has made since the caveman days, the brain has clung tenaciously to its own Paleolithic wiring. This becomes especially noticeable when under stress—which for an addict is just the notion of living a sober life.

Long-term recovery requires a calm brain and a reduction in the survival response that a life without substances elicits in the typical addict. Neurofeedback helps evolve the hijacked brain into one that is interactive.

The Path of a Hijacked Brain vs. a Calm Brain

Hijacked Brain (Reactive)

When the brain bypasses executive functioning and goes straight to survival mode, reacting without considering the consequences.

  • •Amygdala (threat detection) dominates
  • •Prefrontal cortex goes offline
  • •Fight, flight, or freeze response
  • •Impulsive, survival-driven decisions

Calm Brain (Interactive)

The prefrontal cortex (higher brain) evolved over time to help us weigh the consequences of our actions and mitigate impulsive behavior.

  • •Prefrontal cortex remains engaged
  • •Executive functioning online
  • •Thoughtful, considered responses
  • •Ability to delay gratification

Neurofeedback works by training the brain to remain engaged and not be bypassed during a stress reaction. The result is reduced resistance to participating in an addiction program and increased compliance in long-term aftercare.

Why Neurofeedback for Polysubstance Abuse Recovery?

Neurofeedback appears to work by significantly reducing the acute survival response prevalent in early recovery. It works by training the cortex to remain engaged and not be bypassed as usual during a fight-or-flight reaction.

The result is improved compliance in treatment, less recidivism, and most importantly continued 12-step participation after leaving treatment.

Definition: Polysubstance Abuse
Polysubstance abuse is the use of multiple substances to get intoxicated. Any combination of substances can be involved, and the pattern of use often changes over time. Neurofeedback addresses the underlying brain dysregulation that drives the addictive behavior, regardless of the specific substances involved.

Neurofeedback for Children with Tantrums

Severe tantrums are one of the most rewarding issues to help with neurotherapy. When children with this issue improve, it improves the lives of so many people involved with the child. The most common cause of tantrums is right hemispheric issues either from a birth trauma or concussion. It is as if the child's brain has an electrical storm over the part of their brains that regulates insight, awareness of others, and their ability to quiet themselves.

There's usually a life-changing improvement with the issue of tantrums within 8 sessions, although the child will not be finished with neurotherapy after the 8 sessions.

Important: If the issue is not resolved prior to puberty, the issue usually doubles in severity. They already have seizure-like activity in their brains, and now the hormonal changes usually further destabilize them. If the child receives neurofeedback therapy prior to age 12 or 13, they tend to respond more quickly and need less sessions.

There is no minimum age to receive neurotherapy. The youngest child that Bill Scott has worked with successfully was 18 months old.

Care That Is Measured — Because People Are What Matter

Restoring Hope Ministries tracks the well-being of every participant in our clinical and faith-based services using empirically validated screeners, clinical interviews, behavioral analysis, and self-report — so we can honestly see whether the people we serve are getting better.

This rigor reflects the training of our founder, Dr. Jeffrey Gross, who earned an M.S. in Clinical Psychology from the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology and is continuing his Psy.D. studies in Clinical Psychology, with completion anticipated in 2028. His Th.D. in Theology and Ph.D. in Christian Counseling complement that clinical education with theological preparation for Christ-centered soul care.

At Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, he served as a Student Psychologist and later Chief Student Psychologist, supporting veterans and first responders with traumatic brain injuries through the BRAVE program. His work included assessment, individualized treatment planning, multidisciplinary rehabilitation, psychoeducational and process-oriented groups, and peer supervision. His experience also includes supervised psychological testing of clergy at Milwaukee Psychotherapy Collaborative, recovery-focused group development at The Manor by Windrose, and case management and peer-support supervision at Biehl Bridges to Recovery.

Continuing education in assessment, trauma, neurobehavioral conditions, supervision, ethics, and risk management further informs this approach. Together, these experiences help shape RHM’s commitment to careful assessment, responsible documentation, collaborative care, and attention to each person’s spiritual, relational, emotional, and practical needs. His clinical psychology doctorate remains in progress; this background does not replace the qualifications or licensure required for regulated clinical services.
