What Makes Ethical Biblical Counseling?

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. — 2 Timothy 2:15

The word biblical in biblical counseling carries enormous weight. It promises that the practice is rooted in Scripture, oriented toward the glory of God, and shaped by the wisdom of God’s Word. But the biblical mandate is also an ethical mandate — and ethical biblical counseling requires more than good intentions and a knowledge of Scripture.

Core Principles of Ethical Biblical Counseling

Competence: Ethical counselors practice within the boundaries of their training. A biblical counselor who has not been trained in trauma should not attempt to treat complex PTSD without appropriate supervision or referral. Humility about the limits of one’s competence is itself an ethical virtue.

Confidentiality: The counseling relationship is built on trust. What is shared in a session must remain private — with clearly understood exceptions such as imminent safety concerns. Gossip, even under the guise of prayer requests, is a serious ethical violation.

Appropriate boundaries: Dual relationships create conflicts of interest that can compromise both the counseling and the relationship. Ethical counselors are aware of these dynamics and navigate them with care.

Informed consent: Counselees should understand what they are entering into — the approach being used, the limits of the counselor’s training, and the conditions under which confidentiality might be broken.

Cultural sensitivity: Ethical biblical counseling is attentive to the ways that culture, background, and experience shape how people understand themselves, God, and the world.

The Danger of Unethical Counseling

Unethical counseling — even well-intentioned — can cause serious harm. People who seek help in vulnerable states are particularly susceptible to manipulation, false guidance, and re-traumatization.

Training and Supervision as Ethical Requirements

One of the most important markers of ethical biblical counseling is a commitment to ongoing training and supervision. No counselor, regardless of experience, is beyond the need for oversight. RHM requires all counselors to complete rigorous training, maintain regular supervision, and adhere to a clear code of ethics.

Care That Is Measured — Because People Are What Matter

Restoring Hope Ministries tracks the well-being of every participant in our clinical and faith-based services using empirically validated screeners, clinical interviews, behavioral analysis, and self-report — so we can honestly see whether the people we serve are getting better. This rigor reflects the training of our founder, Dr. Gross, whose clinical psychology education and practical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin prepared him for this type of organization and care.
