Raising Children in a Confused World: Biblical Wisdom for Parents

Deuteronomy 6:7 — Impress them on your children.
## The Weight of Parenting Today
Parents today are navigating screens and social media, shifting cultural definitions of identity and gender, anxiety in children at record levels, and a world that seems to move faster than any parent can keep up with. The pressure is immense.
And yet, the core calling has not changed: *"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."* (Proverbs 22:6)
## What Deuteronomy 6 Teaches Us
One of the most foundational parenting texts in all of Scripture is Deuteronomy 6:4-9 — the Shema. After commanding Israel to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength, God immediately turns to parenting:
*"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."*
Notice: the primary mode of Christian parenting is **not programming.** It is **conversation** — woven into the ordinary moments of life. The dinner table. The car ride. The bedtime routine.
Faith is caught as much as taught.
## The Danger of Performance Parenting
One of the greatest traps for Christian parents is raising children to perform faith rather than possess it. We want them to say the right things, attend the right events, and avoid the obvious mistakes — while their hearts remain untouched.
Jesus reserved his sharpest words not for the obviously broken, but for those who had mastered the performance: *"You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence."* (Matthew 23:25)
**The goal is not behavior modification. It is heart transformation.** And only God can do that — but He invites parents to be instruments of it.
## Practical Anchors for Parents
- **Be honest about your own faith struggles.** Children who see authentic, imperfect faith are more resilient than those raised on a performance.
- **Ask more questions than you give answers.** "What do you think about that?" is often more formative than a lecture.
- **Make your home a safe place to doubt.** Children who can ask hard questions at home won't need to leave home to ask them.
- **Stay connected, especially in adolescence.** The research is clear: parental relationship is the single greatest protective factor for teens.
- **Seek support when you need it.** Parent-child conflict, prodigal children, and family disconnection are areas where biblical counseling offers real help.
