Who Am I? Finding Identity When Life Has Stripped Everything Away

Colossians 3:3 — Your life is hidden with Christ in God.
## When the Labels Fall Off We build our identities on things: our roles, our relationships, our achievements, our health, our reputation. Parent. Professional. Spouse. Athlete. For most of life, those labels hold. But what happens when they are stripped away? A diagnosis. A divorce. A job loss. A wayward child. A retirement that leaves you wondering who you are without the title. The question "Who am I?" suddenly has no easy answer. ## Job's Stripped Life Few figures in Scripture embody this experience more viscerally than Job. In a single day, he loses his livestock, his servants, and all ten of his children. Shortly after, he loses his health. His wife tells him to curse God and die. His friends offer theological arguments instead of comfort. And yet, after the whirlwind — after God speaks — Job says something remarkable: *"My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you."* (Job 42:5) The loss didn't destroy Job's identity. It deepened it. When everything else was gone, what remained was **his relationship with God** — and that turned out to be sufficient. ## The Identity the Gospel Provides The New Testament makes an extraordinary claim about those who follow Christ: your identity is no longer primarily what you do, what you've achieved, or even what has been done to you. *"For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God."* (Colossians 3:3) Hidden. Secure. Out of reach of circumstance, failure, or loss. This does not erase the pain of stripped labels. But it means the stripping cannot reach the deepest place — because the deepest place is held by Someone who cannot be taken. ## Practical Questions for Rebuilding When you are rebuilding a sense of self after loss or transition, these questions can help: - What do I believe about God right now — and is that belief actually true? - What have I been told I am that is *not* from God? - What do I know to be true about myself that loss cannot remove? - Who do I have around me who knows me and tells me the truth? ## CCEF Resources on Identity - [CCEF: Who Am I? Linking Self and Faith (Book)](https://www.ccef.org/product/who-am-i-linking-self-and-faith/) - [CCEF: Identity in Christ — Not Feelings](https://www.ccef.org/identity-feelings/) - [CCEF: When Your Identity Is Shaken](https://www.ccef.org/when-your-identity-is-shaken/) ## You Are More Than What You've Lost If life has stripped your labels, you have not lost your self. You may, in fact, be discovering it for the first time. Our counselors at RHM would be honored to walk with you through that discovery.
