5 Scriptures for Anxiety and Fear

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. — Philippians 4:6

Anxiety is one of the most common struggles people face today — and it is not new. Throughout Scripture, men and women of faith wrestled with fear, uncertainty, and overwhelming dread. Yet God, in His mercy, has given us His Word as a lamp, a refuge, and a source of deep peace that surpasses human understanding.

Here are five scriptures that speak directly to anxious hearts — and how to hold onto them when worry feels relentless.

1. Philippians 4:6-7 — The Peace That Guards Your Heart

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This is perhaps the most direct biblical command regarding anxiety. Notice it does not say, try not to worry. It gives us a replacement action: prayer with thanksgiving. When we bring our fears to God, He replaces them — not with answers we demand, but with a peace that guards us like a sentry at the gate of our hearts.

2. Isaiah 41:10 — I Am With You

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Fear often grows in isolation. The antidote Isaiah offers is not a strategy or a technique — it is the presence of God. He does not say the threat will disappear. He says, I am with you. That is the foundation upon which courage is built.

3. Matthew 6:34 — One Day at a Time

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Jesus understood that much of our anxiety lives in the future — what might happen, what could go wrong, what we cannot control. His instruction is practical and grounding: stay in today. Tomorrow is God's territory. Your only assignment is faithfulness in the present moment.

4. Psalm 34:4 — He Delivered Me From My Fears

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

David wrote this psalm from a place of real danger. He did not simply philosophize about anxiety — he lived it. And he found that seeking the Lord was the path to deliverance.

5. 1 Peter 5:7 — Cast Your Anxiety on Him

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

The word cast implies an active, deliberate throw — not a gentle surrender but a decisive releasing. You are invited to hurl your anxiety onto Jesus, not because He wants your suffering to linger, but because He genuinely cares for you.

When Scripture Is Not Enough on Its Own

These scriptures are true, powerful, and life-giving. But for many people, anxiety has roots that go deeper than information alone can reach — roots in trauma, loss, chronic stress, or learned patterns of thinking. Biblical counseling offers a space where Scripture and compassionate care meet together to address anxiety at its source.
